An excellent recap, my friend!!! Sounds like the players were really into it if they essentially hijacked the prepared storyline to chase down the assassin! Thanks so much for running that scenario for them! I'm so sorry time ran out for you guys while running it, because it sounds like it was leading to a really awesome climax! The battle on the under-repair aqueduct with all the scaffolding sounds incredible! Man,...I wish I had the opportunity to run some combats with you side-by-side, so tha…

Hey there! Since this thread was essentially a launching point for the discussion of the "Humanimal" fan fiction you mentioned in the initial post as well as your last response, we've realized we needed to move it to our "Off-Topic Discussions" section of the forums so that it could continue as desired without getting mixed in with the specifically exclusive "SHARD Magic" threads... Whereas we think the creative outlet of fan fiction is excellent, and certainly encourage creative writing of all …

    I GOT THE BOOK!

Scott Jones - - News and Announcements

    Post

Well,...for the sake of Dárdüni fiction, it's less about "modesty" for scholars such as Púrjava, and more about the handy excuse of "that's just not how Dárdüni scribes do things", because of the shared cultural/religious context of why jánah look like different animals... And for the sake of Shard Studios' including such information in it's current writings, that "handy excuse" I mentioned in the above paragraph specifically refers to it being handy for us because we just haven't chosen to take…

There are actually several, which I haven't had the opportunity to share yet, such as the platypus and the binturong, each of which are showcased in images other than the ones that, of course, accompany each of the new Animal Templates... I'll share them later when I have the chance!

    How do Snakes Cry?

Scott Jones - - World of Dárdünah

    Post

Excellent question! Dig if you will a picture,.... Oh,..wait,...that's doves... As you know, we have indicated that serpents have no eyelids,...and I have always run my games as if snakes produce no tears, even though they still go through the motions and vocalizations of "crying"... We haven't really mentioned snake tears in the core rules anywhere, because the need to determine whether actual tears are produced when "crying" happens for snakes, specifically, hasn't ever become an issue in-game…

Heh! Sorry about that.... Worry not, though, for if we ever expand upon Púrjava's exploits or writings further, we may develop him more and actually decide upon a jenu for him tucked away in one reference or another... That might eventually come in our hoped-for "Traveler's Guides" we want to one day create for each individual nation, which will allow for MUCH more depth and fiction... Scottie

    I GOT THE BOOK!

Scott Jones - - News and Announcements

    Post

The historical scholar Púrjava wrote his works some 300 years before "current day" Dárdünah, and although his writings are well-received and honored by most academies of the world, they are ancient enough that very little is known about the jánah himself, other than that he hailed from Nilám, studied both the more ancient histories of the Klin predating the Wars of Twilight as well as the eventual seclusion of the bats of Klin on Klinráh, and lastly that he was lucky enough to have actually visi…

To celebrate getting the Magic and Martial Arts book ready to print, here's yet another fantastic piece of artwork by one of our art contributors Kirsten Fugett... This piece will be used as the opening art for our chapter on Martial Styles, and illustrates an excellent snippet of fiction by Dylan Birtolo, who helped with large portions of the re-writes for our book in its earlier stages. I'll include it here if you'd like to check it out!: Rajendra was the only one still standing in the room. T…

I have excellent news, everyone!!! The Magic and Martial Arts book is finally CONTENT COMPLETE!!!! As of yesterday, every bit of content, loads of new and exceptional art, and the copious amount of additional material we've added to the book (literally more than a hundred pages of extra material), have now been incorporated into the final finished InDesign document, and we're now doing one last read-through to spot-check for errors before getting our final printing quote and sending it off to th…

    When Herbivores Fight

Scott Jones - - SHARD Combat

    Post

Marsupials tend to be of all shapes and sizes, and usually fit into the broader categories we use to indicate what Zoics might live where in Dárdünah... In general, as Griffin noted, there's no singular Dárdüni country where marsupials might come from in the SHARD RPG, and might instead be found in any of the areas Griffin listed, and potentially in others, if the climate there is suitable for their tastes... Though you may notice that we sometimes indicate "types" of animals living in one regio…

Hey there! Allow me to congratulate you on receiving the Basic Compendium as a holiday gift! Hopefully you'll enjoy reading through the various fictional descriptions of the different elements of our game! As Griffin mentions, the short bits of text in the Dárdünah Glossary describing each of the nations of the world barely do them justice in comparison to what you will eventually see in the World Guide, which we are editing and trying to finish this coming year of 2018! If you are interested is…

Indeed! Griffin has essentially illuminated this topic perfectly... As you will eventually see detailed in the World Guide, there are a number of facts and other bits of information concerning the "Physiology of the Zoics" that we will expand upon to allow GMs a greater width and breadth of information to draw upon when digging into further details for their own campaigns. What we will most likely NOT do is delve deep into the "nitty-gritty" of various personal and private bodily functions (male…

Cool! Hopefully the folks at Emerald Knights enjoyed checking it out! We're hoping you'll really enjoy the histories and fictional snippets attached to each of the new Martial Styles... And, in addition to the individual styles themselves, each of the four categories these styles fall into (Temple, Lineal, Military, and Arena) has a few pages of fictional reference to add context to how these kinds of styles came to be! Happy New Year, by the way! Scottie

    the Deva

Scott Jones - - World of Dárdünah

    Post

Yes,...in many ways you are correct! While I don't want there to be "stats" representing the Devah, I would certainly agree that various different stories about their amazing feats, heroic actions, and interesting antics abound throughout the world of Dárdünah. And yes, they could be as "racy" as the Lita and the Swan tale of ancient Greece on our world, as horrific as the tale of the titan Kronos devouring his children or Arachne being transformed into a spider, or as hilariously violent as the…

  • User Avatar

Well, for the sake of the world of Dárdünah, certainly, Griffin has laid out the specifics and particulars quite well, and has provided at least a basis by which you could imagine all these events transpiring for the sake of someone's campaign storyline... And remember, of course, that even testimony in a magistrate's court concerning magic would be highly questionable in most cases, except under the circumstances where, as Griffin mentioned, those being questioned had very powerful contacts and…

Of course! And recall, if you will, how interesting and yet terrifying the character of "No Face" was in the Miyazaki animation "Spirited Away"... Even though, in the end, it was a being that could be pitied and empathized with, it started off being mysterious, became sinister and horrific, and ultimately became terrifyingly frightening before it eventually was able to vomit up the "corruption" it had taken into itself... Much of this seemed very "alien" to most American audiences, but certainly…

Once again, an excellent reply Griffin... I agree with all the details Griffin mentioned concerning the way SHARD sees and deals with this topic... In fact, in some of the old game sessions I and the original creator Arron once ran, it became evident that even in upper echelons of the governments of different nations, same-sex companions were recognized as viable companions and noted concubines... But as Griffin also mentioned, just as there could be acceptance in some circles, there could be de…
