I don't blame a system for anything. On the other hand, I call a spade a spade. IMO, NO iteration of D&D is well designed. The concept is great, the implementation, meh. Fair has no place in the discussion...the fact is that most popular games are popular and chosen because they are pretty and visible, and many games that are better designed and would be more fun go by the wayside because of a lack of visibility. There are better games free on the internet! I share your distaste of 3.5, but I fi…

Check. My last group was a bit combat oriented too. Didn't like 7th Sea largely because they thought parts of the combat system were nerfed (the armor rules, as I remember...'whaddya mean only the German like guys get plate' and so on). I was studying the character sheets in the welcome booklet, looks like Shard has a healthy skill system. Points for it, IMO.

Yep. However, what makes the rats and bats more similar to the Shard zoics is the fact that humans are responsible... PG13

Nobody took social skills in 7th Sea? That was kind of a waste, what with the specifically social mechanics I seem to remember. When I get to play, which is rarely, my favorite type of character is the educated soldier/mercenary. Like Andrea Orsini in 'Prince of Foxes' or Peter Blood in 'Captain Blood'. I love Rafael Sabatini. So I agree, the best way to handle the problem (if so percieved) is to make sure there are situations where those 'useless' skills are very useful indeed. I just don't lik…

'Rats, Bats, and Vats' is a science fiction novel written a few years ago, by Eric Flint and Dave Freer. It might be entertaining for anyone who likes the Shard setting (the zoic concept in particular), as it is about uplifted rats and bats plus a vat born human who are serving as cannon fodder on the front lines of a war to defend an interstellar colony. It is funny as hell, very tongue in cheek and the 'animals' tend to be more 'human' than many of the humans. There is a sequel which has less …

First, I don't try to encourage 'culture', that is, skills of limited use in game play. I do, however, put the players in situations where such skills would have been useful. (I know exactly what the OP is talking about: most of my GMing has been for Basic Roleplaying, most defiinitely a skill based system). I don't try to enforce a certain play style, though. Ever. Second, I have been known to pass a little questionnaire around the first session with a series of questions like 'rate your most t…

Draj, thanks but no thanks. 4e looks like one of the worst 'rpg' designs I have ever seen. IMO, of course. And nothing personal. What is good for you about Shard, especially in the mechanics of the game? Have you run it yet?

Thank you. I don't mean for you to have to defend your game, I hope you know that. It looks very good, but just isn't the kind of system I am used to. And I am not entirely comfortable with the Zoic concept or the dice pools. At least the dice pools are smallish, usually 5-8 I think I read somewhere. Anyway, I did not expect you to post something that lengthy and involved, but your passion shows through in doing it anyway. You do have a lot of good points, and I have been looking for something d…

...not the setting, that's sold. This is some of the best artwork I have ever seen for a role playing game (I may get the book even if I never play it). I find the backstory and culture very evocative as well. I found and read all the fantastic fiction, mythology and such I could get my hands on when I was a kid including Far Eastern, the Kalevala, and so on...like some others here I didn't stop with King Arthur, Greek mythology, and all the other familiar legends and stories. My father taught m…

Hello all, my first post here. I was looking through frp games and saw this game on pre order. I then came to the site and became enthralled. Although I am not 100% sold, I am definitely interested. Enough to register and investigate further...
