I left this out of my massive deluge on Scott after our game the other night, but I feel pretty strongly that the basic book should include both the martial arts rules and the magic rules. Why? 1. Honestly, how many people are going to want to play the game and NOT want martial arts? You're forcing people to buy two books just to play the basic game, or make their character. 2. You describe sihribasi (spelling, bah) but you cannot make one at ALL without the magic rules. This means you can't eve…

For what it's worth, I think Dárdünah as a name is just fine. Yes, it's a bit unorthodox and unique but I think that works to it's advantage as well. I think a vanilla, boring name like 'Shard' removes the initial impression of the game. I know that every member (if I may speak so freely) of our play testing group feels the same way. I think changing the name is silly, to be honest. You want a name that is evocative and lets you know right off the bat that this isn't your familiar elf-and-dwarf …

Scott, What are your feelings on what Joe and I posted? I'm curious as to your answer - I know that if you have a particular vision in mind and that you aren't looking for a market-friendly and wide-cast game, that will help me know to keep my mouth shut when I have those sorts of pieces of advice.

I agree with Joe and Eric, wholeheartedly. I think the big question to ask (like Joe said) is what is the game's goal. If it's to create a niche product that is a labor of love and exactly the way you want it to be, exactly how you want it to be played, then sure. You're good. But understand that in today's RPG market with today's sales figures you will likely never break even, it'll be a loss. But sometimes that's less important then making a labor of love real - and I can respect that. If you …

Scott: Joe is working on a list.

  • User Avatar

So .. unfortunately I cannot come up with a list example since I don't know hardly anything about the game. Maybe I can work with Caleb/Joe to come up with some examples. I do feel pretty strongly that you should pick the ten most common caste/profession options and make example equipment lists for something. Something - anything - that helps people see as an example what they'd carry would be help. Remember that people outside of your core group (and the folks that have played the game for year…

I'm all for the new character sheet but I gotta be honest, I got a cold cold chill when you mentioned making my character again a third time... /heh

NOTE: Caleb and Joe are both out of town until next week and I'm not sure about Kendra's Internet access, as of late her home connection has been down. I don't know about Faith or Kristin, I know Faith was having issues getting logged in. I just finished reading the absolute last few pages of the new chapter - I'll try to read the rest today if I can but I wanted to hone in on the materialism/equipment stuff to reply to your question. First off, this sentence: "For the purposes of the dalán (cry…

I think the thing to remember here is that in the game should be flexible - that is to say that it should allow those GMs and players that want a more amorpheous situation to have that, but should also offer a solution for those GMs and players that want more structure and an expectation of what their characters should have. My suggestion would be to have an optional rule (like you suggested Scott) to create a set of starting funds and a simple list of common items for each caste. I know that it…

    Dark Ambush and Initiative...

AH HA. OK, that makes way more sense now. We weren't doing that at all. That's why when I had 10 actions it took -forever-.

I like the -6 idea in terms of the blind effects. I still humbly disagree with the initiative rules though - it's not a 1 for 1 resource loss. For example: 1. Tinahn'badal attacks Phamo. Tinahn'badal uses a martial arts maneuver from Eye of the Blessed that takes up 3 actions. Phamo simply rolls his defense dice and only uses up 1 action. Sure, I can use defense maneuevers, but I don't have to. That's kind of what I meant by there being no advantage. If that makes sense?

Now that I think about it, I think I screwed up the Dark Ambush stuff - I think if I can see and you can't, and you attack me you get your normal attack dice but I get twice my defense action pool?

    Dark Ambush and Initiative...

    betafu - - Basic Rules

    Post

I'd like to see some changes to both initiative and Dark Ambush. For the former ... there's no benefit in going first. None at all. Your opponent gets a free action in response to attack you, and they get to use whatever defense maneuvers they have. What's the benefit in rolling high and going first? There really isn't any. The smart player will voluntarily drop their initative low to see what's going on before committing themselves. Dark Ambush - the penalty to defense makes sense, but there's …

Actually, I'd just fold it into the cost of the Profession. The other options are awkward (even writing it down with a value of 1 - this is going to lead to confusion as people think they are paying for it twice). I know you feel strongly about it being an advantage, but honestly I think it'd fit better just folded in with your profession if you aren't going to pay for it separately in the same step.

  • User Avatar

I actually agree with this, and this came up when we were redoing chargen with Scott there. I feel like it should go: Caste -> Profession -> Animal Template -> Characteristics -> Animal Abilities -> Skills -> Advantages -> Drawbacks. And actually, since your profession affects your skills, I can actually see: Animal Template -> Characteristics -> Animal Abilities -> Caste -> Profession -> Skills -> Advantages -> Drawbacks. Professions and Skills should be tied together, since the first flows int…

    Klin help.

    betafu - - Fiction Feedback

    Post

First off, MANY THANKS to Scott for hanging out with us at my place last night and helping us remake our characters! And the brownies. Oh god, the brownies. I'd violate a Turkish sailor for those damn things. Anyway. I made a klin. Any suggestions from anyone more in the know about mannerisms? Ideas? Mindsets? Characteristics from a personality level? I've read and reread the section in the world book, but any information you guys can offer (privately, or here) would be great. I'm looking to soa…

This is my second pass at character generation, and some ideas I had: 1. Can you use a phrase other then 'Abilities' and 'Animal Abilities'? It's confusing. For one, they're the same name. Secondarily, 'Abilities' encompasses several things, and I think a better name would refer to what the points are spent on. 2. I'm checking p. 27 at the beginning of chargen for the table Scott talked about, and I can't see it still. I'm looking for one table that details the point costs for talents, advantage…

(snip) I think you're right - I think we didn't follow the chapters straight through, we bounced around. Here's some responses on some of the various comments...: Advantages similarity to WoD: I'm assuming you actually meant Drawbacks (those are the items you listed),..not Advantages.... I've actually never heard of World of Darkness, but I'll surely look into it…

Grr. I'm a dumbass. Caleb informs me it's SKILLS. That's the one where buying additional points past your characteristic level was really confusing. I hope he clarifies (Caleb) what our confusion was. If you want to come over some time and watch us play just let us know!

  • User Avatar

OK, I apologize - it was early this morning and I think I made some mistakes! I was talking about talents - talents were very confusing. That's the one where the math computation is vastly different - I've asked Caleb to clarify it for you (he's the one that first noticed it). I think what we maybe did was not follow the book. The PDF was very very frustrating to deal with (not your fault, I know! But it was huge enough that it made scrolling through it slow and tedious) so we just ended up boun…
