Quote from Teenage Mutant Sarpah: “And...In recent news a story exposing the dark side of arranged marriage dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5…ed-arranged-marriage.html” Yes, indeed,...there can ABSOLUTELY be a dark side to arranged marriages... They have been a part of old-world culture in many different countries since ancient times, and in some places even today, as your article indicated... The cool thing about Shard (and role-playing games in general), is that you and your gaming group, under t…

The funny thing is,...in Dárdünah, with so many of the "root" animal behaviors that might still exist in polite society (perhaps grooming behaviors and such), some of the behaviors you describe might not seem so out-of-place! But yes,...I guarantee that a good GM could find all sorts of ways to show that such "inter-species" behavior might become unwelcome once you travel outside that community, that culture, or even that country... When I was a little kid in Japan, there were always locals that…

Quote from Ednoria: “Yes, the last that was seen of Captain Nemo was a vision of him in the Dream, surrounded by flames and with one arm hanging limply at his side. The implication is that he and his crew did not survive -- but I left open the possibility that he COULD have, in case I needed a storyline later. :-)” I REALLY love this extra twist you added to the story Ednoria... Cool stuff! Scottie

Quote from Targath: “Is the Magic and Martial Arts book going to be released as a PDF on drivethrurpg around the same time as the physical book or perhaps a little sooner to garner some interest? Just curious as I do intend to buy the physical book when it becomes available.” Hey Targath! Good to see you again! Sorry it's been fairly lifeless here for such a long time... It took awhile to get things settled with Aaron, my former business partner. But now that things are back up and running again…

Quote from Teenage Mutant Sarpah: “I didn't write Klinrah I wrote Kilarah, isn't that how her name is spelled?” Oh! You're thinking of Krilárah,…the devah of the moons, magic, prophesy, and love… You just left out the “r”, which is why he was initially confused… Speaking about things love-related, there are several things we’re expanding upon in the eventual “World Guide” that I’m actually starting to work on again even now, which you may be interested in… Here are a few “Rite of Life” descripti…

    Entertainers in Dardunah

Scott Jones - - World of Dárdünah

    Post

An entire troupe of entertainers and performers was used as a means of allowing the main characters of one of our earliest games to travel into the northern Sarpah lands to infiltrate Benáng during a time of war... Merely having that kind of travelling communal group created MANY different and very cool interactions... I'd compare the experience to many aspects of the HBO series "Carniválle" with its many unique flavors and types of characters, as well as the strange and sometimes creepy circums…

We have finally sent off the last of the edited documents to the printer, and the process has begun! As things are schedule now, we should see the shipment of books arriving at our publisher by the midddle of May!... To celebrate, I figured I'd share another illustration and bit of fiction... Here we have another excellent piece by our contributing artist Ilsa Gort. She based this work on another excellent piece of fiction by Dylan Birtolo heralding in the beginning of our Magic Rituals chapter.…

    The surinam toad

Scott Jones - - World of Dárdünah

    Post

Here you go! Here's the Animal Template for the Surinam Toad (in particular, the image is of the Carvalho's Surinam Toad, one of the "prettier" varieties). As you know, this creature is especially interesting because the female of the species on Earth places her fertilized eggs onto her back, where they sink into the skin while developing as babies, later to emerge from her back when "born"... In the world of Shard, this has become an adaptation allowing a female character of this type to place …

An excellent recap, my friend!!! Sounds like the players were really into it if they essentially hijacked the prepared storyline to chase down the assassin! Thanks so much for running that scenario for them! I'm so sorry time ran out for you guys while running it, because it sounds like it was leading to a really awesome climax! The battle on the under-repair aqueduct with all the scaffolding sounds incredible! Man,...I wish I had the opportunity to run some combats with you side-by-side, so tha…

Hey there! Since this thread was essentially a launching point for the discussion of the "Humanimal" fan fiction you mentioned in the initial post as well as your last response, we've realized we needed to move it to our "Off-Topic Discussions" section of the forums so that it could continue as desired without getting mixed in with the specifically exclusive "SHARD Magic" threads... Whereas we think the creative outlet of fan fiction is excellent, and certainly encourage creative writing of all …

    I GOT THE BOOK!

Scott Jones - - News and Announcements

    Post

Well,...for the sake of Dárdüni fiction, it's less about "modesty" for scholars such as Púrjava, and more about the handy excuse of "that's just not how Dárdüni scribes do things", because of the shared cultural/religious context of why jánah look like different animals... And for the sake of Shard Studios' including such information in it's current writings, that "handy excuse" I mentioned in the above paragraph specifically refers to it being handy for us because we just haven't chosen to take…

There are actually several, which I haven't had the opportunity to share yet, such as the platypus and the binturong, each of which are showcased in images other than the ones that, of course, accompany each of the new Animal Templates... I'll share them later when I have the chance!

    How do Snakes Cry?

Scott Jones - - World of Dárdünah

    Post

Excellent question! Dig if you will a picture,.... Oh,..wait,...that's doves... As you know, we have indicated that serpents have no eyelids,...and I have always run my games as if snakes produce no tears, even though they still go through the motions and vocalizations of "crying"... We haven't really mentioned snake tears in the core rules anywhere, because the need to determine whether actual tears are produced when "crying" happens for snakes, specifically, hasn't ever become an issue in-game…

    I GOT THE BOOK!

Scott Jones - - News and Announcements

    Post

Heh! Sorry about that.... Worry not, though, for if we ever expand upon Púrjava's exploits or writings further, we may develop him more and actually decide upon a jenu for him tucked away in one reference or another... That might eventually come in our hoped-for "Traveler's Guides" we want to one day create for each individual nation, which will allow for MUCH more depth and fiction... Scottie

    I GOT THE BOOK!

Scott Jones - - News and Announcements

    Post

The historical scholar Púrjava wrote his works some 300 years before "current day" Dárdünah, and although his writings are well-received and honored by most academies of the world, they are ancient enough that very little is known about the jánah himself, other than that he hailed from Nilám, studied both the more ancient histories of the Klin predating the Wars of Twilight as well as the eventual seclusion of the bats of Klin on Klinráh, and lastly that he was lucky enough to have actually visi…

To celebrate getting the Magic and Martial Arts book ready to print, here's yet another fantastic piece of artwork by one of our art contributors Kirsten Fugett... This piece will be used as the opening art for our chapter on Martial Styles, and illustrates an excellent snippet of fiction by Dylan Birtolo, who helped with large portions of the re-writes for our book in its earlier stages. I'll include it here if you'd like to check it out!: Rajendra was the only one still standing in the room. T…
