Yes, the last that was seen of Captain Nemo was a vision of him in the Dream, surrounded by flames and with one arm hanging limply at his side. The implication is that he and his crew did not survive -- but I left open the possibility that he COULD have, in case I needed a storyline later.

It would make a great story, though, if a non-bat was born to bats on the island of Klinrah due to a long-ago love match in the ancestry of one of the bats. That child might be wanted, and even loved, but it also might be seen as shameful. Perhaps he/she would be hidden away, or perhaps the parents would pretend it was a slave, or perhaps they might seek to send him/her away to another country in the hope that he/she might have a better life. A player character with that kind of background could…

The characters had been captured/kidnapped by Shard's equivalent of Captain Nemo -- a janah whose great ambition was to sail across the gap between the shards. After many weeks, he freed them and sent a crew member along with them (all his crew were from the Loruh, sort of equivalent to all of Captain Nemo's crew being from some unknown tribe, and they were fanatically loyal). There were three badger brothers who drew straws to see who would go with them -- the loser stayed with the characters, …

So what you're basically saying is, "who wants to play the bard?" Currently I'm running a campaign set in the University of Nilam, where all the players are faculty (or a grad student, in one case). One is an elephant with an eidetic memory who studies ancient poetry. He has given performances on more than one occasion. He is good enough that he can captivate even those who don't understand the language he is speaking, so he has occasionally been instrumental (pun intended) in influencing other …

Hello to you too Griffin! I have actually been a member of this forum since 2009, but have only recently started checking it again. I'm looking forward to the new book, as are my players! Diane

Dardunah does not have just one legal system, so it would depend on the country. Some might go one way, some another.

Since the small bats (which includes the vampire bats) are very unlikely to ever leave Klinrah, they have a ready source of blood already -- slaves.

Although I understand that the World Guide will have much more information, I think it's unreasonable to ask everyone to wait for however many years it might be until it comes out! I have been running Shard for several years now, and I have a player who plays a Klin. We have done our own world-building when it comes to Klin and Klinrah, and I think it has worked out well. In my world, Klin are indeed secretive and xenophobic and have a huge superiority complex when it comes to the rest of Dardun…

I agree with everything you said! What I mean is, you have to re-roll that 1d6 every time for Initiative. So that number could be anything from 1 to 6. But Agility + Fast Reflexes doesn't change (well, not often anyway). So let's say my jánah has an Agility of 4, and no Fast Reflexes. In the box I would put 4. The text underneath would say Agility + Fast Reflexes Rank, because that is what is IN THE BOX. I guess I'm saying that the text underneath should tell you what is in the box, instead of t…

Scottie, does that apply to Throw and Missile Combat skills as well? So if you know Martial Arts you take no penalty for using the Maneuver Location Table (unless you're using Artillery...), no matter what type of combat you're engaging in?

Looking at these a bit more, I'm thinking you might want to change the text a bit, as it's not clear what is fixed and what you roll. So instead of 1d6 + Agility + Fast Reflexes Rank just use Agility + Fast Reflexes Rank since that's the fixed amount. For the second one, it would be 2 + Combat Instinct Rank Just a suggestion! I have players who are still confused about how many dice to roll each time, which is why I'm being so picky. But it's very useful the way it is, and thank you again! I'm s…

I already made ten of the first version. I was going to ask you to make the bits you cut out a bit more obvious, because they don't show up real well on colored paper. I see you've done that for the boxes to cut out to see the numbers, can you do that for parts you punch out too? It would make things a bit easier. And thank you! These were a big hit in my game yesterday.

One of my players is playing a mouse assassin. Over the course of the game he's developed a mouse "culture" -- mice are small, nobody really pays much attention to them, and they're relatively weak, so they have a sort of network to keep them informed of what's going on. If you've ever read the book "Spook Country" by William Gibson, they're the Systema, a group run by "uncles" that tries its best not to be noticed. He has developed what he calls the "Whisper Tongue", which is a written code the…
