    • RE: make-shift minis.

      Yep!!! These guys are great!

We actually met these folks at Gen Con, along with a sculptor who does some really excellent work, and is even now breaking into miniatures!!!

Between the folks that do the figures for these folks, as well as the good folks at Iron Wind miniatures,...we may be seeing some SHARD figures in the not-too-distant future!

Thanks for showing these to us Tides of Gore!!!!

    • Shards miniatures...

As much as I'd love to see Reaper Miniatures produce a line of official Shard minis, not every GM and/or player has the extra money these days to spend on collecting a bunch of minis. That being said, not every company is prepared to risk the cost of having minis produced. A much cheaper alternative can be found here:

      greywolf.critter.net/ironclaw/paper.htm

The artist in question has a cartoony style but it works very well for Ironclaw, another anthro-fantasy rpg albeit one with an occidental aesthetic. With only a little expense, comparative to getting a metal mini to market, cardstock standups are absolutely ideal. The GM can print up all the minis he/she needs for a session and if the minis are black and white, easily customized with markers, colored pencils, or even watercolors. Just print 'em on durable cardstock and you're ready to roll.

Best of all Shard Studios wouldn't have to front printing and distribution costs, they just host the files on their site, or a partner's such as rpgnow or drivethrurpg.com and voila! Print product could even come with a sheet of exclusive cardstock minis. Easy!!

Seriously, some players struggle with spacial awareness and have difficulty keeping things straight based solely on the GM's descriptions. Minis really help even if they're used to give very general indications of tactical situations.

Don't get me wrong, Reaper and Black Orc Games, as well as a few others, produce some fine minis but cheaper alternatives are never a bad idea. If you get real creative, you could even go the route of Precis Intermedia Group's Disposable Heroes line of minis which come in a variety of orientations so GM's have their pick of pogs, A-frame, 3-fold, etc. configurations.
